Second Brain is nonsense It’s just a marketing term used to grab your attention.

Date:

“Second Brain” is an exciting term, and everyone wants an extra brain. But in reality, it is just storing data in various formats

Whether it’s physical note-taking, physical documents, or digital notes on phones, tablets, and computers. Once you take notes, you organize them and create a search system. Basically, that’s all it really is.

The Problem:

When you can’t answer a client, supervisor, or boss on the spot, you end up saying

Hold on, I don’t recall. Let me check my notes for a second

Your credibility will crumble. If it’s a doctor, patients will start to lose trust because some things should be memorized. If you can’t remember them and have to search for information all the time, it becomes an issue. I’ve encountered doctors who open ChatGPT all the time, asking everything even for basic matters it turns into a double-edged sword. It makes us question: “In that case, anyone could be a doctor.”

In the past, workers who lacked solid knowledge liked to do this: “Let me Google the data for a second.” Nowadays, the trend has shifted to “Let me ask AI first.

Many people look at this and see someone who is not ready to work and lacks knowledge. And this mindset will not change easily, no matter how smart AI becomes. Knowing the basics by heart is an ironclad rule. Note-taking is a good thing, but it is still not a second brain ,just like AI and Google are not our second brains.

The question is: What is the difference between searching Google, asking AI, and looking at your own notes?

Your Own Notes:

  1. It has been distilled into a concise, focused, and comprehensive format.
  2. It is written in words that you understand yourself.
  3. It aggregates everything you want to use later.
  4. The accuracy has already been verified.

Searching case-by-case from Google or AI:

  1. You don’t get all the data at once.
  2. You have to filter it again.
  3. It might not be 100% accurate.

Then how can a Second Brain be nonsense?

It is nonsense in terms of using exaggerated words. Note-taking is not a brain. It is just recorded data. You still have to sit there and search because you can’t remember it. Writing things down is just a temporary offloading of data.

Accept it for what it is, and maximize the benefits of making a knowledge base. Understand it and have the right expectations so you won’t fall victim to marketing, and increase your own credibility without overusing this term.
